Alumni and friends of Indiana State University gathered for the 32nd annual President’s Scholars Golf Outing, raising more than $103,000 to support the continuation of the University’s most prestigious scholarship. The outing was presented by Ratio and hosted at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Indianapolis.
“The President’s Scholarship represents an investment in students who have already demonstrated tremendous potential as scholars and leaders,” said Indiana State University President Mike Godard. “For more than three decades, this outing has brought together Sycamores who believe in creating opportunities for exceptional students to thrive at Indiana State. We are grateful for their continued generosity and the lasting impact it has on our students, our University, and the communities our graduates go on to serve.”
The President’s Scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen or transfer students in the undergraduate program who have demonstrated high scholastic achievement and leadership. The scholarship provides each recipient with full tuition and premium housing at Indiana State University. President’s Scholars become members of the Honors College, which fosters a supportive and challenging environment for outstanding students through interdisciplinary learning, faculty mentorship, and opportunities in leadership, service, research, and study abroad.
“The support generated through this outing provides our President’s Scholars with opportunities that extend far beyond financial assistance,” said Greg Bierly, Dean of the Honors College. “Our scholars are able to build relationships, explore their interests, develop as leaders, and fully engage in the Indiana State experience. The generosity of those who support this program helps our students make the most of their time at the University and prepares them to make an impact long after graduation.”
This year, nine scholars and a recent alumni joined the outing and gained leadership and networking skills with trailblazing leaders from all over the country. Jetta Harmon, one of the participating scholars in this year’s outing, is a senior majoring in biology on the pre-medicine track. Harmon has volunteered as the student putter for two years at the President’s Scholars Golf Outing.
“The President’s Scholarship has given me the opportunity to fully invest in my education and prepare for my future in medicine. Knowing that others believe in my potential motivates me to work hard, make the most of every opportunity at Indiana State, and one day use my education to make a difference in the lives of others,” said Harmon.
This year’s event also provided an opportunity to honor the memory of Rex Kendall, a longtime Indiana State University leader and a steady presence at the President’s Scholars Golf Outing for many years before his passing earlier this year. During the outing, Vice President Andrea Angel raised additional support for the Rex Kendall Memorial Scholarship, providing golfers and friends of the University another way to celebrate Rex’s legacy and continue his commitment to Indiana State students.
“The continued success of the President’s Scholars Golf Outing speaks to the extraordinary commitment our alumni, donors, sponsors, and friends have to Indiana State students,” said Andrea Angel, Vice President of University Advancement and CEO of the Indiana State University Foundation. “This year was especially meaningful as we remembered Rex, who was such a familiar and valued presence at this outing for so many years. I am grateful to everyone who joined us in honoring his legacy through support of the Rex Kendall Memorial Scholarship, while continuing the tradition of investing in our President’s Scholars and creating opportunities for Sycamores to learn, lead, and succeed.”
