Sycamore Video’s promotion manager, Karen Torres, was awarded the Culp Scholarship for spring 2021. Torres, a senior from Columbus, Ind., is a communication major with a concentration in public relations and media studies.
Funded by Ron and Sandra Culp, this scholarship is awarded to a high achieving communication student with a concentration in public relations or journalism. The faculty and staff of the Communication Department nominate students that display involvement around campus. They then vote to select a winner.
“I am extremely thankful for the award that the communication department has gifted me,” Torres said. “It’s such an honor to be able to accept this award and I am extremely thankful to each and everyone of the faculty and staff who have supported me and been there throughout my journey of developing into an educated, successful woman. Words cannot describe how excited I am to be in this position and to have met all these amazing people. I am forever grateful. “
Torres has been involved in student media since fall 2017 when she started as a volunteer the first semester of her freshman year. Over time, she has worked many roles including assistant production manager, news director, executive producer, and is currently the promotion manager for Sycamore Video.
Torres believes that the opportunities in student media have helped her achieve the Culp scholarship saying, “Without student media, I wouldn’t have met as many faculty and staff as I have. I also wouldn’t have had the chance to work with student marketing and President Deborah Curtis.”
Ron and Sandra Culp both studied political science and journalism at Indiana State. They spent their time in school expanding ISU’s student newspaper to reach not only the campus but the community too. This experience served them well in their careers and according to the ISU Foundation’s website the Culps hope that all graduating Sycamores also feel ready to go out into the world.
