Terre Haute Children’s Choir

The THCC offers three different choirs to accommodate the singing experience of every child:

Sing Up! Is a foundational choir generally for ages 6 and 7 which focuses on vocal exploration, finding the singing voice, and experiencing singing in a choral group through the use of simple melodies, engaging singing games and movement activities. Goals for this group are to develop the focus, aural skills and basic music-reading skills that prepare them for choral performance on a more advanced level. They perform on the final concert and perhaps on one other performance as the occasion arises.

Lyric Choir is an intermediate choral group generally for ages 8 – 11 whose members sing in the treble range. Students in this group should be able to match pitch and be ready to follow the music score, Focus is on singing in tune and developing a pure choral tone. They begin with unison singing and reading very simple rhythmic and pitch patterns and then progress to singing 2-part music. Good singing technique is central to the instruction, as well as continued development of aural and reading skills. They generally will have at least one performance in addition to the final concert.

Youth Chorale is our new advanced group, generally for ages 11 – 18, which for the first time in THCC history will include voices singing in the tenor/bass range.. Singers in this group must match pitch in their vocal range and be able to follow their part in the choral score. They will perform 3 or 4-pt music. The focus on singing technique is intensified with the intent of developing a beautiful choral tone and expressing singing. The students will be expected to do some preparation at home from week-to-week on the music and on their music-reading skills in general. In addition to the final concert they will have a few other performances in the community as opportunities arise.

Children may progress to the more advanced choirs through bi-annual auditions. All three groups participate in a concert at the end of each semester.
