When we think about Black women and self-care, the terms, often, appear oxymoronic or contradictory. For Black women, many of whom were legally denied self-hood, the practice of self-care was a radical endeavor. Black women took “care” of themselves in a variety of ways—many choose their methods of care to sustain and maintain a culture; some used “care” to sustain and nourish themselves. This discussion will explore the variety of ways that black women “radically” practiced self-care.
