Indiana State University have announced details on the upcoming Concert Band performances this Fall. These concerts will provide a unique opportunity for local musicians to collaborate with students enrolled in any major at the institution, whilst inviting special guests to showcase their talents alongside the band.
The first event takes place on Tuesday, September 24 in a program called ‘Jazz Pairings’ with special guests, the John Spicknall Jazz Trio. Spicknall, an Emeritus faculty member from the Indiana State University School of Music leads the trio and is joined by bassist Eric Schatz and drummer Jonah Reel.
The second concert on Tuesday, November 19 will feature the Indianapolis Trombone Choir and Norm Hanson, Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble Director at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Both concerts take place at Indiana State University’s Tilson Auditorium at 7:30pm. They are free to attend and open to the public. Further information can be found via facebook.com/SycamoreBands.
The Concert Band are also seeking woodwind, brass, and percussionist musicians in the region to join for the 2024-25 Academic Year. New members of the Indiana State University Concert Band will be able to perform in the upcoming Fall concerts.
The ensemble is open to professional and non-professional musicians who are available on Tuesday nights from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Whilst many members from the community are alumni or those with careers in music education, anyone who is interested in continuing their musical journey is welcome to join.
Allison Duerk, Director of the Eugene V. Debs Museum graduated from Indiana State University’s Political Science major in 2016 and is a seasoned horn player. She joined the Concert Band in 2018 because she wanted to stay connected to the institution post-commencement. She said, “Taking part in Indiana State University’s Concert Band allows me to continue performing in a way that allows me to work around my schedule.”
Duerk added, “I also enjoy working with the next generation of musicians and guiding them through the performance process as they grow and develop their skills further.”
The first rehearsal will take place on Tuesday, August 20. Musicians who are interested in joining are encouraged to fill out the application form online here. Alternatively, they can email Dr. Eric Scott, Director of Sycamore Bands via Eric.Scott@indstate.edu.
