Dr. Paul Bro (saxophone) will perform an eclectic mix of chamber music by contemporary composers as part of Indiana State University’s Faculty Artist Series at 7:30 p.m. on February 8, 2024 in the Boyce Recital Hall of the Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts (300 N. 7th Street). He will be joined by ISU colleagues Martha Krasnican (piano), Andrea Hoyt (clarinet), Yunjung Lee (violin), and Kurt Fowler (cello).
The recital will feature works by Alastair Penman (from Australia), Weinbin Lyu (from China), Stacy Garrop, Mark Engebretson, and Migel del Aguila (from Uruguay, now based in Seattle). All but Penman have participated in ISU’s annual Contemporary Music Festival, with their most recent participation being Garrop as Principal Guest Composer in 2022, Aguila as Principal Guest Composer in 2023, Lyu on the 2023 Festival, and Engebretson on the 2020 Festival. Bro will play Garrop’s “My Dearest Ruth,” a musical setting (with video) of the last love letter written by Martin Ginsburg to his wife, the opera-loving Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Bro has performed throughout the United States and Canada as well as in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. As a soloist, Bro has performed concertos with the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, the U.S. Navy Band, the Royal Air Force Band of Belgium, and the Tambov Symphony Orchestra (Russia).
