This Saturday, June 21, 2025, a memorial service and celebration of life will honor George Lewis (Lew) Hackleman III, who passed away on August 1, 2024, at the age of 86. A cherished educator, artist, and friend, Lew left a lasting legacy through his decades of work in theater and his deep roots in the Terre Haute community.
Lew joined Indiana State University in 1966 as an assistant scenic designer and technical director. Over the years, he designed more than 40 productions, directed nearly 60, and taught across almost every discipline in theater. For 38 years, he was a steady presence in the Department of Theater, inspiring generations of students with his creativity, dedication, and collaborative spirit. Even in retirement, he remained active in the arts, acting and directing with Crossroads Repertory Theatre and other regional companies.
In tribute to his life, all Crossroads Repertory Theatre performances of The Wizard of Oz this season are dedicated to Lew. A show rich in imagination and heart, it reflects the same qualities he brought to the stage—and to everyone who worked alongside him.
Those wishing to honor the memories of Lew and his beloved wife, Kathy, may make contributions to the Lew and Kathy Hackleman Scholarship at Indiana State University. This fund supports returning Indiana State theater students who demonstrate talent, commitment, and collaboration—values the Hacklemans championed for decades.
Lew’s influence continues to shape the theater community he helped build, and his spirit will guide future generations long after the final bow.
