Authors Jennifer Hirsch and Shamus Khan will be the keynote speakers of this year’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month event at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2021. The event will be virtual with an in-person participation option available in Dede I (with social distancing overflow room available in Dede II and III).
Hirsch, a professor of socio-medical sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, and Khan, a professor of Sociology and American Studies at Princeton University, will discuss their book, Sexual Citizens: A Landmark Study of Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus.
Named one of NPR’s best books of 2020, Hirsch and Khan lay out an expansive, empirically-grounded vision for campus sexual assault prevention.
“The narratives detailed throughout the book pull the readers in and widens their peripheral views regarding relationships and sex,” said organizer Kourtney Barrett, Deputy Title IX Coordinator at ISU. “By reading this book and participating in the discussion, individuals will be more apt to Say Something and Step Up when they hear of similar situations that may have happened to their friends. It may also encourage them to report their own experience.”
The Title IX Office has around 300 books to share with the ISU community. To receive a book, visit the event page and register.
