The School of Music invites you to join us for the 59th Annual Contemporary Music Festival Wednesday-Friday, October 22-24!
This year, the festival features guest composer and Indiana State alumnus Damien Geter, who was recently honored with the Library of Virginia’s highest award, the Honorary Patron of Letters degree. Geter is recognized nationally as a composer and acclaimed bass-baritone, seamlessly blending classical music with influences from the Black diaspora to champion social justice.
The Opening Festival Concert featuring our student ensembles will take place on Wednesday evening, October 22, at 7:30 pm in Tilson Auditorium. As part of this concert, the Indiana State University Wind Orchestra will present the World Premiere of Geter’s “Poem of Defiance” commissioned by an Indiana State University-led consortium. Thursday evening’s performance at 7:30 pm in Boyce Recital Hall of the Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts will include performances of Geter’s works by renowned guest artists Jason Ferrante (tenor), Tesia Kwarteng (mezzo soprano), and Adam Richardson (baritone).
During daytime hours, both Thursday and Friday will be filled with sessions and concerts. At 4:00 pm on Thursday afternoon, pianist Jixue Yang will perform a multi-disciplinary piano recital. Other featured concerts include the Student Performer/Composer Recital on Thursday at 10:30am and the Music Now Composition Contest Winner Recital on Friday afternoon at 2:00pm. All festival events are free and open to the public.
