Julia Bruce, a beloved friend and retiree of Indiana State University will be front and center of one of the most beloved events for ISU and the community, the Homecoming Parade.
Bruce spent four decades at Indiana State and is the longest-standing Administrative Assistant of the Charles E. Brown African American Cultural Center. She was brought on staff right after high school by Mr. Charlie Brown himself in 1981.
Aside from her admin duties, Bruce was an instrumental component of growth for students frequenting the cultural center, serving as advisor to the Black Student Union, Sisters Too, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and Ebony Majestic Choir; she even served as Director for a time.
Bruce, also known as Ju-Ju by her student staff, was the coordinator of the Minority Work Program, renamed Mentoring Assistance Prospective Scholars in the 90’s, and of the Ms. Ebony Pageant for 25 years.
She retired from Indiana State University in May of 2023, however, her legacy will remain for years to come through the stories of Black Alumni throughout her career.
